Vietnam's squid and octopus exports exceeded USD 111 million in early 2026, reflecting a 23% increase from last year. What factors are shaping this market recovery?

Vietnam's squid and octopus exports reached over USD 111 million in the first two months of 2026, marking a 23% increase from the same period in 2025. This growth reflects a recovery in demand across several markets. Squid exports led the charge, generating more than USD 64 million, a nearly 30% rise year-on-year. Octopus exports also performed well, reaching over USD 47 million, up more than 16%.

Vietnam's seafood export performance in early 2026 contrasts with last year's trends, where overall seafood exports totaled approximately USD 1.7 billion in January and February. The recovery in squid and octopus exports suggests a shift in consumer preferences, particularly in Asia. South Korea remains the largest market for these products, with nearly USD 42 million in purchases, up almost 23%. Japan follows with close to USD 26 million, an increase of around 8%. Notably, exports to China surged by more than 85%, while Thailand saw over 41% growth.

The demand for squid products is benefiting Vietnamese exporters, particularly those focused on Asian markets. Companies like Minh Phu Seafood Corporation, which has a significant stake in squid and octopus production, are likely to see improved margins due to rising export values. Conversely, the decline in exports to the European Union, down approximately 14.5%, may impact companies reliant on that market, forcing them to pivot strategies or seek new opportunities.

How will shifts in consumer preferences affect the future of Vietnam's seafood export strategies?
