Vietnam’s pangasius sector is testing offshore farming as it looks to adapt to climate pressure and expand beyond the Mekong Delta. What could this mean for supply and technology needs?

Vietnam’s pangasius industry is testing marine and brackish-water farming as it looks to spread production beyond the Mekong Delta and adapt to climate pressure. The shift comes as pangasius exports reached $212 million in January 2026, up 59% from a year earlier, according to Vietnam Customs data cited by Vietfish Magazine.

The idea is not new. Experts say studies and pilot farms have already shown pangasius can adapt to saline water within limits. What is new is the scale of the push, with localities and companies now promoting marine farming models as a way to use coastal water space that has gone largely untapped.

The problem is that offshore farming is not the same as pond farming. It needs cage systems, water management and technical routines that Vietnam’s current production base does not fully have. Salt-tolerant fingerlings are still in the research stage, which keeps the model from moving beyond trials.

The export rebound in early 2026 gives the industry room to invest, but it also raises the stakes. If producers expand too fast without reliable broodstock and farming systems, output quality and survival rates will suffer. That would hit a sector that is already trying to defend its position in export markets.

For farmers in the Mekong Delta, offshore and brackish-water farming offers a way to reduce pressure on crowded inland ponds. For equipment suppliers and hatcheries, it creates demand for cages, monitoring systems and better seed stock.

An Giang is one province moving ahead. In 2026, it aims to produce more than 133,000 tonnes of marine aquaculture products, including around 20,000 tonnes of cage-cultured finfish. That target shows how provincial plans are starting to include species beyond the traditional pond model.

Exporters benefit if the shift improves supply stability and helps Vietnam keep pangasius volumes moving after the January jump. But processors and farmers face higher costs first, because marine systems require more capital and more technical control than standard ponds.
