Vietnam’s pangasius sector is upgrading broodstock and fingerlings to improve growth and cut costs. Here’s why the seed overhaul matters for competitiveness.
Vietnam’s pangasius industry is restructuring from broodstock to fingerlings to lift productivity and export competitiveness. Industry authorities said the G5 selective breeding generation has a growth rate about 15.4% higher than earlier generations, a gain that can lower feed use and improve farm output.
The focus on seed quality shows where the industry sees its main bottlenecks. Better broodstock and hatchery systems can raise survival rates, cut disease losses and improve traceability, which matters as import markets tighten rules on food safety and origin.
The move also reflects pressure from higher production costs. Pangasius farms in the Mekong Delta face thinner margins when feed, labor and disease control costs rise faster than export prices.
The restructuring runs beyond breeding. Provinces in the Mekong Delta are building higher-grade seed systems and adding science and technology in hatcheries and grow-out farms. That points to a shift from volume growth alone toward tighter control over the full supply chain.
Farmers with access to improved fingerlings stand to gain first. Faster growth and lower feed conversion ratios can reduce costs per kilogram and improve survival, while small hatcheries that cannot meet new standards face pressure to consolidate or exit.
Exporters also benefit if traceability improves. Buyers in major markets have become stricter on documentation, and a cleaner seed-to-farm chain gives processors more room to meet those demands.
